A little history

Julius Caesar reportedly used a shift of 3 to protect military messages, which is why that cipher carries his name. The pigpen cipher was used by Freemasons in the 1700s, and Morse code, created in the 1830s–40s, carried telegraph messages around the world. SOS (··· ––– ···) is still the most famous Morse signal.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest secret code for kids?

Backwards writing and the number code (A=1, B=2…) are the easiest. The Caesar cipher with a shift of 1 or 3 is a great next step.

How do you decode a Caesar cipher?

Shift every letter back by the same number used to encode it. If you don’t know the number, try all 25 shifts. One will make sense!

How does the pigpen cipher work?

Letters are placed in two tic-tac-toe grids and two X shapes (the second of each has dots). Each letter is replaced by the shape of the lines around it.

How do you write SOS in Morse code?

SOS is three dots, three dashes and three dots: ··· ––– ···.
