When is the Aqiqah?

According to the hadith, the child is “held in pledge” for its Aqiqah, which is sacrificed on the seventh day, when the child is named and its head is shaved (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi). Most scholars count the day of birth as day one, so the seventh day falls six days after birth. If it cannot be done on the 7th, many scholars mention the 14th or 21st day, and it may be done later.

How many animals for a boy and a girl?

ChildSunnahMinimum
Boy2 goats or sheep1 goat or sheep
Girl1 goat or sheep1 goat or sheep
Cow or camelOne large animal can cover up to 7 shares, as in Qurbani (per the Hanafi and Shafi’i schools)

The animal should meet the same conditions as Qurbani: healthy, free of major defects, and of the right age (goat about 1 year, sheep about 6 months if well grown, cow 2 years).

Hair sadaqah

It is Sunnah to shave the newborn’s head and give the weight of the hair in silver as charity, as Fatimah (RA) did for Hasan and Husayn (RA). Most families give the cash value of that silver weight.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the 7th day for Aqiqah?

Count the day of birth as day one and add six days. A quick check: the Aqiqah falls on the weekday before the weekday of birth, so a baby born on Friday has the Aqiqah on Thursday.

How many goats are needed for a baby boy's Aqiqah?

Two goats or sheep is the Sunnah for a boy, and one for a girl. One goat for a boy is also permissible if two is not affordable.

Can we do Aqiqah later if we missed the 7th day?

Yes. Many scholars recommend the 14th or 21st day, and it remains valid afterwards. Some scholars also allow adults to do their own Aqiqah if their parents did not.

Can a cow share be used for Aqiqah?

According to the Hanafi and Shafi’i schools, a cow or camel can be divided into seven shares for Aqiqah, like Qurbani. Some Maliki and Hanbali scholars prefer a whole goat or sheep per share. Follow your own scholar’s guidance.

What is the hair sadaqah?

On the 7th day the baby’s head is shaved and the weight of the hair in silver is given in charity. If the hair weighs 5 g and silver costs 300 per gram in your currency, the sadaqah is 1,500.

How is the total aqiqah cost worked out?

Total cost = number of animals × price per animal, plus the hair sadaqah and any butcher or cooking charges. For one boy (two goats) and one girl (one goat), you need three animals.
