Bookbinding & Junk Journal Signature Calculator

Signatures, sheets, blank pages and printing order for handmade books and junk journals.

This free bookbinding signature calculator plans your book block and gives you the print order for every folded sheet. Planning a sewn book, notebook or junk journal? Enter how many pages you want and how many sheets go in each signature. The calculator tells you how many signatures and sheets you need and how many blank pages you will have, and gives the exact page order to print on each side of every sheet so your pages come out in sequence after folding.

3–6 is typical; fewer for thick paper.

How to use the Bookbinding Signature Calculator

  1. Choose what you know to start the plan.
  2. Enter total pages (page sides) and sheets per signature.
  3. Pick the fold and, if you like, the paper weight in gsm.
  4. Press Calculate signatures to see blank pages and the duplex print order.

Print one test signature in the bookbinding signature calculator order before you print the whole book. Wikipedia’s bookbinding article covers the history and the main binding styles.

How signatures work

A signature is a group of sheets folded together and sewn through the fold. When a sheet is folded once, it gives 2 leaves, or 4 pages (front and back). Folding twice gives 8 pages.

Pages per signature = sheets per signature × 4 (folded once) Signatures = total pages ÷ pages per signature (round up) Blank pages = signatures × pages per signature − pages wanted

How many sheets per signature?

  • Printer paper (80–100 gsm): 4–6 sheets. More than 8 makes a thick fold and pushes the inner pages out (creep).
  • Watercolour or mixed-media paper (200–300 gsm): 2–3 sheets.
  • Junk journals: 3–5 mixed sheets plus tucks, pockets and flips. Thin the stack if you add lots of ephemera, so the spine stays flexible.

Printing tips

  • Print a one-signature test first to check the page order and the duplex flip direction.
  • Fold with the grain parallel to the spine. Pages lie flatter and the fold cracks less.
  • For a junk journal with printable kit pages, lay out full spreads in the imposition order shown above.

Frequently asked questions

How many pages are in a signature?

Four pages per folded sheet. A signature of 4 sheets has 16 pages, 5 sheets has 20, and 6 sheets has 24.

What if my page count doesn't divide evenly?

The calculator rounds up to whole signatures and shows the leftover blank pages. You can use them as endpapers, or change the sheets per signature to reduce the waste.

What paper thickness should I use for a junk journal?

90–120 gsm printer paper for printed pages, with heavier cardstock (170–250 gsm) for covers and tucks. Keep the heavier sheets to about 3 per signature.

What is the correct print order for a booklet?

For a 4-sheet signature (16 pages), the outer sheet carries pages 16 and 1 on the front and 2 and 15 on the back. The table above lists every sheet.

What is the bookbinding signature formula?

With a single fold, each sheet gives 4 pages, so pages per signature = sheets × 4. Signatures needed = total pages ÷ pages per signature, rounded up, and the extra pages become blanks. A 90-page book with 4-sheet (16-page) signatures needs 6 signatures and 6 blank pages.

How many signatures does a junk journal need?

Junk journals often use 4 to 6 signatures of 4 to 6 folded sheets each. Mixed and heavy papers make signatures thick and hard to sew, so use fewer sheets per signature for paper over about 120 gsm.

Which fold should I choose?

A single fold (folio) gives 4 pages per sheet and suits most home-printed books. A quarto (two folds) gives 8 pages per sheet, but the folds must be cut open after binding, so it is mainly used with thin paper.
