This free leather square footage calculator tells you how much leather to buy for your project. List your pattern pieces, or start from a preset project such as a wallet, tote or belt. The calculator totals the leather you need, adds waste for hide shape and flaws, and suggests which hide cut to buy. It also converts upholstery fabric yardage into leather square footage.

How to use the Leather Square Footage Calculator
- Start from a preset, or add your own pattern pieces with + Add piece.
- Choose the measurement unit and enter each piece’s size.
- Set a waste allowance and, if you like, the price per square foot.
- Press Calculate leather to see the total area and the hide size to buy.
If you’re working from a sewing pattern, use the fabric yardage converter in the leather square footage calculator, then allow for hide shape and flaws. For how hides are tanned and graded, see Wikipedia’s leather article.
How leather is measured
Leather is sold by area, in square feet (or decimetres in Europe), measured by machine over the whole irregular hide. The usable area is always less because of the shape, belly edges, holes, brands and scars. Plan for 15–35% waste depending on piece size.
Typical hide and skin sizes
| Cut | Typical size | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Goat / lamb skin | 4–8 sq ft | Linings, small goods, garments |
| Cow belly | 5–8 sq ft | Linings, pouches, non-structural parts |
| Cow shoulder | 8–12 sq ft | Wallets, sheaths, small bags |
| Double shoulder | 14–18 sq ft | Belts, straps, holsters |
| Side (half hide) | 20–25 sq ft | Bags, long straps, larger projects |
| Full hide | 40–55 sq ft | Upholstery, jackets, batch production |
Tips to reduce waste
- Nest small pieces (card pockets, keepers) into the edges and belly areas.
- Cut structural and visible pieces from the firm backbone and butt area. Use the belly for linings.
- For production, make cardboard or acrylic templates and plan layouts on a photo of the hide.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet of leather do I need for a wallet?
A bifold wallet uses about 0.8–1 sq ft of pattern area, so buy 1–1.25 sq ft with waste. A shoulder or a few offcut panels will make several wallets.
How do I convert yards of fabric to square feet of leather?
A common upholstery rule is yards of 54″ fabric × 18 = sq ft of leather. It includes extra for the irregular hide shape. For example, 5 yards ≈ 90 sq ft.
How big is a full cow hide?
Usually 40–55 sq ft. A side (half hide) is about 20–25 sq ft.
How much waste should I allow?
About 15% for small, flexible layouts, 25% for most projects, and 30–35% for large panels, matched grain or leather with many natural marks.
What is the square feet of leather formula?
Square feet = length (in) × width (in) ÷ 144. A 12 × 18 in piece is 216 ÷ 144 = 1.5 sq ft. Add up every piece, then add a waste allowance.
Is leather sold by area or by weight?
Hides are priced by area (square feet or square decimetres). The ‘ounce’ figure is thickness, not weight: 1 oz is about 1/64 in (0.4 mm), so 4–5 oz leather is about 1.6–2.0 mm thick.
