Embroidery Stitch Count Estimator

Stitch count, machine time and price from design size, coverage and lettering.

This free embroidery stitch count calculator estimates stitches, machine run time and price before you digitize. Quoting a logo before it has been digitized? Enter the design size, how much of it is filled, and any lettering. You get an estimated stitch count, machine run time and price at your rate per 1,000 stitches. It is useful for quick quotes on caps, polos, patches and hoodies.

How to use the Embroidery Stitch Count Calculator

  1. Choose your unit and enter the design width and height.
  2. Set the fill coverage and density, then add the letters in any text and the letter height.
  3. Enter the number of colour changes and your machine speed (SPM).
  4. Add your price per 1,000 stitches and quantity, then press Estimate stitches.

Treat the embroidery stitch count calculator figure as a quoting estimate; the digitized file gives the exact count. For how machines, stitch types and digitizing work, see Wikipedia’s machine embroidery article.

How the stitch estimate works

Fill stitches ≈ width × height (in²) × coverage × 2,000 × density factor Text stitches ≈ letters × letter height (in) × 400 Run time ≈ stitches ÷ SPM + ~10 s per colour change + setup

A completely filled square inch at standard density holds roughly 2,000 stitches including underlay. Real logos rarely fill their whole bounding box, so the coverage setting scales it down. Satin lettering adds about 100 stitches per letter at 1/4″ tall and scales with height.

Typical stitch counts

Final stitch counts come from the digitized file (DST, PES, EXP). Use this estimate for quotes, and confirm or adjust once the design is digitized.

Frequently asked questions

How many stitches is a typical logo?

A typical left-chest logo (about 3.5 × 2 inches) runs 5,000–9,000 stitches, depending on how much is filled and how much text it has.

How is embroidery priced?

Many shops charge per 1,000 stitches (often around $0.50–$1.50 in the US, depending on quantity), sometimes with a minimum per piece and a one-time digitizing fee.

How long does it take to embroider 10,000 stitches?

At 700 stitches per minute, about 14 minutes of stitching plus a minute or two for trims and colour changes.

Why is my actual stitch count different from the estimate?

Digitizers choose different densities, underlays, stitch types and pull compensation. Estimates are typically within 20–30% of the final file.

What is the stitch count formula?

A common estimate for fill areas is about 1,500 to 2,000 stitches per square inch at standard density, times the share of the design that is filled. A 4 × 3 in logo that is 60% filled comes to about 12 × 0.6 × 1,800 ≈ 13,000 stitches.

How do colour changes affect embroidery machine run time?

Each colour change adds time for the machine to switch needles, or for you to rethread a single-needle machine. Allow roughly 10–20 seconds per change on a multi-needle machine and a minute or more on a single-needle one.

Why does small lettering need extra care?

Lettering under about 0.25 in (6 mm) tall is hard to stitch cleanly, because satin columns become too narrow and letters close up. For small text, use a simple sans-serif font or make the letters taller.
